WG2: Status, plans and perspectives for ammonia co-firing in JPN and for H2-ready gas power plants in GER
On 5 April, an expert exchange took place within the framework of Working Group 2 "Hydrogen" of the Japanese-German Energy Partnership. The co-chairs of WG2, Dr. Christine Falken-Großer and TomoAdachi, presented current developments in hydrogen policy in both countries and discussed different policy approaches and cooperation potentials between Germany and Japan.
BMWK presented the recently published revised framework conditions of the power plant strategy, including 10 GW of new H2-ready gas-fired power plants as well as the planned development of a capacity mechanism. METI presented the current status and prospects for the co-firing of ammonia in coal-fired power plants in Japan. Both sides agreed to continue the exchange on the usage of hydrogen and ammonia in different sectors, despite on the different role, both countries have foreseen for H2 and derivatives in sectors such as power production and mobility. The ministries further underlined the importance to not only focus on the production, but also strengthen the demand side.
In addition, both countries exchanged views on newly launched funding instruments for the H2 market ramp-up. Among other things, both countries use contracts for difference, which are intended to promote both the demand and the supply side by requiring buyers and producers of hydrogen to have already been found independently for applications. An in-depth exchange on the details of both mechanisms between experts from both ministries was agreed. It was also decided to continue the exchange on other financing topics beyond CfDs and further ways, that Germany and Japan can jointly develop the global market for hydrogen and derivatives.
